Why Altered View Exists
Hi, I’m Chris, and welcome to Altered View.
I’m a writer, speaker, podcaster and accessibility advocate living with sight loss. Through honest storytelling and real-life experiences, I explore disability, accessibility, technology, travel, family life and everything in between.
Altered View grew from a very personal journey.
I’ve lived with poor eyesight since childhood, but in 2018 I was diagnosed with Cone Dystrophy, a rare inherited retinal condition affecting my central vision. Within a few years I was registered blind. Like many people facing life-changing news, I had a choice: focus on what I’d lost, or discover a different way of seeing the world.
When I set myself the challenge of walking 100km from London to Henley in support of the Macular Society, I created Blind Man with a Backpack to document the journey. What started as a fundraising blog soon became something much bigger. It evolved into a platform where I could share the realities of living with sight loss – the frustrations, the humour, the unexpected moments and the lessons I’d never have learned otherwise.
Today, that journey has evolved again.
Altered View reflects a broader belief that disability is just one of many ways people experience the world differently. Whether I’m writing a personal essay, recording a podcast, speaking at an event or sharing everyday moments on social media, my aim is always the same: to challenge assumptions, encourage understanding and start conversations that might not otherwise happen.
After all, we all share the same world.
We just don’t all experience it in the same way.
